Located on the northern edge of Richmond’s downtown district, Jackson Ward is a historic neighborhood bordered between North Belvidere Street on the west, Interstate 95 to the north, North 4th Street to the east, and East Broad Street to the south. Jackson Ward used to be known as the “Harlem of the South,” and is home to many historic homes, including some that were once owned by famous figures such as Maggie L. Walker, the first female bank president in the United States. The area spans a significant portion of the Arts District, along with Monroe Ward. The architecture in Jackson Ward reflects its rich history, boasting a mix of Greek Revival, Italianate, and Second Empire townhouses and mansions. Many of the homes in Jackson ward have locally manufactured cast-iron porches, the state’s richest display of ornamental ironwork. These grand structures, with their intricate details and high ceilings, stand as a testament to the neighborhood’s past affluence. Today, the area offers a delightful blend of restored historic properties alongside newer infill development.
